This beautiful Victorian Bergfels Cavalry medal is made in 14k yellow gold. It dates from 1904. The top of the medal, in an open work ornate design has the letters PMC engraved (Penn. Military College). The bottom has the year 1904 engraved. Also in an open work design, the center holds 2 gold sabres with red enamel handles and 2 diamond on the side. The back is inscribed awarded to Robert M .Mosser and John G. Bergfels memorial Medal. A beautiful and meaningful piece of jewelry. The top of the medal measures 1". The bottom measures 1 1/6" x 1 1/4". It weighs 11.34 grams.

Some history - . It was a donation from Julius Bergfels, a renowned jeweler from Newark, N.J., in 1897 to honor the memory of his younger brother John G. Bergfels. He served as first sergeant of the Van Reypen’s Unattached Company, First New Jersey Cavalry. During his career as a cavalryman, he took part in as many as eighty skirmishes and engagements, including the Battle of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. During the Battle of the Wilderness, Sergeant Bergfels was mortally wounded at Todd’s Tavern in 1864.
